Mountaineers Winning in the Classroom

When the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) announced its 2023-24 Brechler Awards winners in July, Western walked away with four honors for the first time in Mountaineer history.

The Brechler Awards—initiated with the 2012-13 academic year—are named in honor of Paul W. Brechler, a former RMAC commissioner (1976-90), and his wife Wanda Brechler, who were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Each institution’s compliance administrator submits team GPAs to the RMAC office, and the award is given to the team in each sport with the highest GPA in each of the RMAC’s sports offerings.

Western’s Women’s Swimming and Diving captured its third Brechler in a row and fourth overall, posting an academic year GPA of 3.518. Men’s Basketball earned its third overall and second consecutive Brechler with a 3.727 GPA, while both Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Soccer earned a first-time Brechler with GPAs of 3.681 and 3.685, respectively.
