Western earned the reaffirmation of its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission in July 2023. The vote was a recognition of the University’s commitment to maintaining rigorous academic standards and providing an exceptional educational experience for its students since it was first accredited in 1915.

“Reaffirmation by the Higher Learning Commission is a testament to the commitment of our faculty, staff, and students to excellence in education,” President Brad Baca said. “We are proud to be recognized for our continuous efforts to provide a transformative learning environment that prepares our graduates for successful careers and lifelong learning.”

The once-a-decade process of reaffirmation includes a close examination of the University’s educational programs, faculty qualifications, student resources and support services, institutional integrity, governance, and financial stability.

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Kelsey Bennett, who serves as the University’s Accreditation Liaison Officer and handled the reaffirmation process, said, “Although the tasks associated with the reaffirmation of our accreditation can seem daunting … going through the process of reflecting on the institution’s current strengths, challenges, and aspirations with campus colleagues is ultimately an illuminating and rewarding endeavor.”
