Quick Rise for Mountaineer Cheer: Team takes 3rd at 2022 Nationals after going varsity in 2019

Western cheerleaders practice a routine in the Mountaineer Fieldhouse.

Historically, the cheer program at Western had been a club-sport offering until its move to the athletics department with the hiring of head coach Stacy Fuller leading into the 2019-20 academic year.

Fuller took the reins of the program and has put her squad at the forefront of spirit at Mountaineer athletic events, and in 2022 mentored the team to a third-place finish — the highest placing Division II program — in the Small Co-Ed Show Cheer 4-year College Division at the United Spirit Association (USA) Nationals.

The roster continues to grow each year under Fuller’s guidance. The squad of just four women in 2019-20 grew to that 13-member USA Nationals roster, and this season numbers 20 members, 16 of whom will travel to Anaheim, California, for the 2023 USA Nationals competition on February 25 and 26.

A Western cheerleader strikes a pose while performing at the 2022 national competition.

The program now offers annual clinics and camps for high school cheerleaders, as well as a week-long youth camp for ages 5 and older. And the Mountaineer Cheer Club offers the opportunity to support the program with different donation levels and escalating member benefits.

Fuller brings a wealth of experience to her roll in leading Mountaineer cheer. She was a member of the University of Alabama cheer program that earned two third-place finishes and one second-place finish at the UCA College Nationals. While earning her master’s degree at the University of Central Florida she coached the Knights’ varsity squad to a national championship title.

Mountaineer spirit will continue to grow as Fuller expands the roster and the visibility — locally and nationally — of the Western Colorado cheer squad.
